The sermon series we're doing at church right now is called "One Month to Live", which is also carrying over into most of the small groups that are meeting during the week. It's obviously quite a lot to think about-what you would do differently if you knew your time here was about to be cut short. But I think the main thing we want to take away from it all is that you should live your life as if your time is limited-because in reality it is. Sometimes life feels long and complicated, yet it is "but a breath" (Psalm 39:5). Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn't it?
This Sunday's message was called "Leaving a Legacy". That really stood out to me, because while I've thought briefly about that before, I've never really given it a huge amount of thought. Of course I immediately thought of Nichole Nordeman's song called "Legacy" that came out several years back (I relate LOTS of things to music, so for now it's playing on the blog!), and decided to really listen to the lyrics after hearing the sermon. It's really a lot to think about! What am I doing today that will make an impact on those around me? Or on my husband, my family, or my future kids?
I remember when I was a little girl that I used to pray for God to "help me be a godly woman when I grow up". Of course I had heard that phrase from a loving adult in my life, and I didn't have much of a clue as to what it meant when I started praying it around age 8 or so. I still don't always get it right, but that is what I aspire to be. I have had many wonderful examples of godly women in my life, for which I am thankful to learn from. God has been so gracious to me! I have always been fortunate to have the support of a loving, Christian family. I have been deeply affected by the legacy of faith that my family has passed down to me-talk about an amazing impact!
This very cool verse also came up on Sunday-I have read it before but had forgotten it.
"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8
That's my family's legacy, and what I want to carry on in my life.
Another very good point made was say the words that God wants you to say. That is something else that I know I don't always do right, and my musically inclined mind then thought of the song "Say" by John Mayer (hence, it also made the blog playlist). They even sang this song at the end of the service, so that was really cool in my opinion. Very simple concept, but it just resonated with me for some reason. Maybe it's because sometimes I figure I'll just be quiet instead of speak up-since that's what people may come to expect of my peaceful nature. Or maybe it's because I think that's what people expect of me. It was just a really good thing for me to think about. I was later listening to to the song at home and Landon commented that the song is "kinda repetitive". Yes, but it gets the point across!
Two more really good thoughts from the message are what I'll end with:
Are you living for all that God died to give you?
Will your life outlive you?
